My role at Isthmus integrates both landscape assessment and design thinking, resulting in a process we call ‘Design Planning’. My career in New Zealand builds upon my landscape assessment experience from the United Kingdom, with a focus on work within the infrastructure, renewable, recreational and residential sectors, and continued work in education, aquaculture, commercial and industrial developments. My role as a design planner seeks early involvement in projects so that I can successfully guide developments to be responsive to existing site conditions and the underlying RMA context, ultimately ‘de-risking’ projects when it comes to the consenting stage. The early identification and understanding of project constraints results in a more appropriate design and is the first step towards mitigating potential adverse effects on landscape character, natural character and visual amenity.During my career at Isthmus, I have been responsible for the preparation and presentation of evidence at hearings in support of both resource consent applications and designations. I have also presented findings at Environment Court mediation. Whilst my main focus is the production of landscape and visual assessments, I have regular involvement in design and masterplanning work and other forms of landscape assessment such as character studies; which have been used to inform both design and district level policy. Jun 2014 - Feb 2019
During my time at Aspect Landscape Planning Ltd, I was given the opportunity to work on a range of projects in the residential, commercial, industrial, retail and renewable sectors. Aspect specialises in Landscape Planning and Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments for new developments, however I also worked on a vast quantity of design projects ranging from detailed proposals to large scale strategic concepts. I regularly undertook work on heavily constrained projects, often located in the Green Belt, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and locally designated sites, with proposals ranging from singular dwellings to large scale mixed use developments and new villages in the open countryside. Working on such a broad breadth of projects allowed me to hone my skills in landscape responsive design, ensuring that projects adopt a landscape led approach and can be successfully integrated into the wider environment and setting. I regularly produced documentation for landscape assessments and evidence to support expert witness’. I often took projects through from initial scoping and outline concept to detailed design and construction, including hard and soft landscape details and undertaking snagging lists. Show less

FPCR Environment and Design Ltd (FPCR) is a multi-disciplinary practise, combining Landscape Architecture, Ecology and Arboriculture. I was employed by FPCR at various points throughout my undergraduate degree and as a graduate landscape architect during my ‘year in professional practise’ prior to obtaining my masters degree. During my time at FPCR, I predominantly worked within the landscape department with continued work with both arboriculture and ecology, allowing me to gain an appreciation of the overlap between disciplines. Whilst working in the landscape department, I was responsible for both graphical and technical assistance for masterplanning and detailed design projects. I also gained experience producing Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments for projects in the residential and renewable sectors. My early experience at FPCR guided me towards landscape assessment and masterplanning, which has remained the focus of my work throughout my professional career. Show less
