I participated in the behavioral neuroscience department at Idaho State University as a research fellow for Idaho INBRE. My research project explored the intelligence of the isolated spinal cord in rat pups. We exacted complete spinal transections in the mid-thoracic region of one-day-old rats and examined the neural plasticity of their spinal cords. In order to do so, I trained the rat pups on treadmills from day 10 to day 17 after surgery and observed their recovery based on various hind-limb movements. We hypothesized that treadmill training the rat pups after a full spinal transection would improve their hindlimb locomotor function and decrease the methylation of the BDNF gene in the spinal cord. The epigenetic properties of the nervous system were examined after sacrifice through external resources. This project is still ongoing, though I presented my own findings at the regional INBRE conference at the University of Idaho in Moscow. These findings represented an increase in locomotion through treadmill training between both the transected and sham rats. Despite a lack of connectivity between the hind limbs and the brain via the spinal cord, basic reflexes remain intact that allow the surgically transected rat pups to walk again. This phenomenon lends itself to the infant lesion effect which demonstrates that developing nervous systems recover much more fully than mature systems following a spinal cord injury.
