PI: Laurie Sanders, Ph.D. Mentor: Claudia Gonzalez-Hunt, Ph.D. The Sanders Lab was the first to establish the connection between the gain-of-function leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) G2019S mutation and the accumulation of mitochondrial DNA damage. The lab works to further understand the pathogenic mechanisms linking LRRK2 to Parkinson's Disease. Currently exploring the LRRK2-mediated progression of senescence and its downstream signaling pathways in cellular models of PD and the role of the DNA damage response pathway in rescuing DNA damage and aging phenotypes. Assisting on a project examining the accumulation of DNA damage foci and repair proteins in the substantia nigra pars compacta of LRRK2 G2019S mouse models. Previously established the correlation between LRRK2 G2019S in a human embryonic kidney cell line and shorter doubling time. Show less
