    • Clinical Research Coordinator for the MASALA Study
      • Aug 2016 - Aug 2017

The Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America (MASALA) Study is the first longitudinal study in U.S. South Asians to understand what factors lead to heart disease and guide prevention and treatment of heart disease. While heart disease is the number one cause of death worldwide, accounting for 30% of deaths, it actually accounts for 60% of deaths in South Asians. Since most studies do not have a comprehensive profile of South Asians to investigate behavioral, social, cultural, and clinical risk factors and there are currently only a handful of long-term studies of South Asians, MASALA will explore newer emerging risk factors for heart disease as well as the most effective strategies for prevention and treatment for South Asians. As clinical research coordinator, I am responsible for screenings, bilingual interviews in English & Hindi, and guiding patients through consent and clinical exams. I will also collect data from these exams to build a longitudinal database for further mixed-methods (quantitative and qualitative) analysis by physician-social scientists on our UCSF and Northwestern University MASALA team. I am thrilled to be a part of a landmark study and effective movement to generate holistic knowledge about and for this at-risk immigrant population. Show less
