RexKL has been a cinema, a backpackers’ hostel, migrant housing and the victim of two fires, but architect Shin Tseng’s revitalisation has given this classic building its highest purpose. He and his team revived RexKL’s cultural heritage but kept the structure and atmosphere; this created a creative space for artists and entrepreneurs to host film screenings, political lectures, performance events, tuak rice wine brewing workshops and vintage flea markets, among other events, elevating the neighbourhood in the process.

I would like to think that 'design' is like 'starch' - a shapeless bonding agent that needs to be properly mixed and integrated with other ingredients in order to create wonderful outcome. Shin likes to design with more sensitivity in a collaborative manner to create architecture or design that co-exists harmoniously with its users and context.
