I am currently responsible for planning and implementation of IT solutions throughout the enterprise which is comprised of three main branches in the Middle East, with affiliate offices in the USA and other locations. I am also responsible for recommending the necessary hardware, software, services and supplier negotiation regarding the technical and financial aspects. The company has successfully implemented SAP, and as IT head, I was heavily involved in the whole cycle of selecting the implementation partner, hardware sizing, business blue print mapping, and system implementation in the company until the go live of the system. The implementation was deployed throughout the whole company in a big bang fashion, covering SD, MM, FI, CRM, PP, PM, QM, HR, PI and BI modules. Prior to the go live, user requirements were collected, modeled into data entry scenarios and reports. Test cases were listed and documented, and acceptance was based on them. Training was also scheduled and carried on by the implementation partner and the IT department. Prior to SAP, the software that was used in the company, which was all developed in-house, is an ERP system covering the companies activities through all branches as one integrated unit. It is based on MS SQL database, with web based user interface, developed using ASP and ASP.net. Many more tools are involved in the system, including Windows applications, services and web services. PERL tools were also used to bridge the gap between our hardware monitoring and our software. Reports are either web based, or automatically generated and sent as Excel files by email. I am aided by a team of ten people to manage this system, which includes 350 users and their computers, 20+ servers, 30+ network devices and one million lines of code. The system was successfully deployed in all our branches, with support conducted from our headquarters in Cairo Show less

    • Technical manager for EgyNile
      • Jul 1999 - Dec 2000

EgyNile was established as an ISP, and I was responsible for all technical aspects of it, beginning with the design phase, startup and operation. We had an initial capacity of 2000 subscribers, with planned growth to support 7000 very quickly. The solution was based on a SUN Solaris Unix box running Radius server. The Radius was used for authenticating the users that dialed us up through the access servers that were connected to our E1 lines. Our main connection to the Internet was from two different sources to ensure service continuity. A Bay Networks router and a Cisco firewall controlled the traffic between out internal setup and the Internet.Web design and hosting were through Microsoft IIS and Visual Studio 6. PERL was used heavily to automate our subscription process and automatic disconnecting those whose subscriptions have expired, including monthly and hourly subscribers. All those tools were developed in-house. They interfaced between our database and the ready made applications (Radius and mail servers).I assembled a very homogeneous team to run that operation. It consisted of three web developers, five support representatives and a network manager. Show less

    • Technical Manager
      • Sep 1993 - Jun 1999

Established in Sep 1993, I was responsible for our technical services like networking, software development and training. We successfully rolled many networks into operation, including one at EMEC, a petroleum services company, which comprised around 40 PC, using coaxial cables based on a Novell 3.11 server. This was later upgraded to UTP cables using Microsoft Windows NT server. Others were won in several governmental institutions as a result of public tenders. Several software packages were developed and deployed. They were mostly based on Microsoft Access versions 1, 2 and 97. These covered a wide range of applications, including a ticketing application, stock control and accounting. Some of these applications are still running until now in spite of the fact that the company is no longer in operation. As for the training, we had a six seat training center that had a continuous schedule and catered both for individuals and corporate staff. Show less

I was responsible for supervising all activities of both the MIS system and the CAD system. The MIS system was running on a Data General super mini computer using a hierarchal database and several programming tools and languages, like Cobol and Fortran, as well as a report generator, and a general office application called CEO, which included a word processor and spreadsheet application. The CAD system was a ComputerVision dedicated CAD system running proprietary OS and software. I also introduced PCs into the company, and by the time I left, there were more than 50 PCs, linked by a coaxial Ethernet network based on Microsoft Windows 3.11. This move upgraded our presentation capabilities and ease of use, as well as widening the use of computers throughout the company. During this time, I was also responsible for supporting a sister company, Tea Computers, in promoting a GIS system, based on UNIX and running on SUN platform. I also had brief encounters with remote sensing applications and satellite imagery The department was comprised of six people, not including myself. The ECG is an engineering consulting firm with more than 400 fulltime engineers. Show less
