FIRST Chesapeake is a non-profit organization focused on bringing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)-based leadership enrichment programs and competitions to youth in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. This role was multifaceted. I began as an adult English instructor for international students achieving English proficiency to matriculate to the undergraduate program at VA Tech. During my tenure, I was an instructor, advisor, and mentor to over 400 adult students in the Intensive English Program, Advantage VT Program, and Technical Writing Class. In addition to teaching, I also helped pioneer and implement the J1 Scholar Interview process now used by school across the nation and assisted with TOEFL Administration and Department Formative Assessment. My role as Program Assistant included accreditation, curriculum development, assessment development, registration and enrollment, technology integration, LMS training, and professional development delivery. Pioneered and launched the first Chinese immersion program in SW VA. Secured funding, hired teachers, wrote the Chinese and English curriculums for PreK through 8th grades, coordinated standard-based assessments, created experiential learning opportunities, and coordinated with other non-traditional programs to ensure students had access to STEM, music, and extracurricular opportunities.
