I had the pleasure of working with Shelley at one of the Airlines based in South Africa. We trained the Airline staff in Emergency Response and held full-scale ERP exercises at different Airports the Airline flew. In Zanzibar, we spent a lot of time upskilling the newly appointed Airline staff on Operational duties and Emergency Response. Shelley's absolute commitment, passion and knowledge of Emergency Response were astonishing. Shelley is a kindhearted and lovely person to work with, she is always willing to go above and beyond to assist her work colleagues and the company to reach their goals. She is always a positive and upbeat person that always sees the good in others. I would recommend Shelley to any company looking for a committed, loyal, subject matter expert in ERP and other functions within Aviation or other industries. I have a great deal of respect for Shelley and am proud to be able to provide this recommendation. Kindest regards, Rudi Rademan

In December 2017, a position in the Safety department opened. I applied for the position and was honoured when I was appointment. Occupational Health and Safety is a department where one learns on a daily basis. Hazard identification and injury on duty are just two areas where I have learnt so much. Holding regular SHE REP meetings and training sessions allows us to encourage staff to be safe in the workplace and follow the rules. The Emergency Response Planning side is one topic that I am passionate about. Teaching staff and management by means of training sessions and exercises, is always rewarding. Conversing with external parties allows me to learn more of the bigger picture.

During my time in the training department, my functions included updating of various manuals, developing training material and programmes and facilitating the training programmes. The courses I trained included: Standard Operating Procedures for Ramp Agents, Checkin Staff, Lost Luggage Staff and Team Leaders. Other training included the Groubd Operations Manual, Airport Authority Airside Induction and Dangerous Goods CAT 9, 10 and 11. In order to train Dangerous Goods, I attended and passed Dangerous Goods Cat 6, was assessed by the Civil Aviation Authority and was accredited to train the course. As a trainer, another but just as important function, was administrative duties. This included record keeping, printing of training materials, occasionally, booking of venues and pre-course communications.

The need arose at Comair to conduct Air Rage Training and that is where my interest grew in Emergency Response. I attended courses in London with British Airways, AVIEM and had the privilege of attending two Symposiums with AVIEM in Atlanta, Georgia. Due to the training I received, I was able to develop check lists, train and exercise staff, roles players and management, responsible for the various areas in the case of an emergency. I attended many Full Scale Exercises held around South Africa and over boarder destinations, evaluating their Emergency Plan and giving feedback on their exercise. I developed a training course called 'Emergency Champions' where we selected volunteers from each station and trained them up to be responsible for their stations emergency plan. Their function would include ensuring all contact numbers were up to date, all changes would be updated, training of staff would be organised and an exercise would be arranged. Meeting with Role Players, eg, Airport Company, Medical, Fire and Rescue etc was an important and ongoing role as it allowed trust to be built and ensured that any changes to the airport plan was corrected in our airline's plan.

Comair organised a Train the Trainer course, for which I volunteered and was given the opportunity to become an airport based trainer. The training grew and the number of programmes increased, which led to the position becoming full time. Training included various programmes for new staff, check in training, customer service programmes and airside induction training.Updating manuals, developing training programmes, keeping training records, rostering staff for courses, preparing staff for courses and marking of exams, was a daily function of the Executive Trainers. We introduced Craft Manuals (on the job training) and became National Qualification Assessors in order to move forward with assessing staff.

Joining Comair was an amazing experience, fresh out of college. I worked my way through the various airport functions, including, arrival and departures, check in, ramp agent, lost luggage, ticket sales and departure control. I was given the privilege of becoming a Supervisor and acting Airport Manager, on weekends. The experience I gained at the airport is priceless and assisted when I moved on to be a trainer.
