This MA included modules on: Collections Care, Conservation Science, Applied Research Practice, a Work-placed Learning Module (student internship) and a dissertation. For my dissertation on "Safe handling and storage of ethnobotanical objects: evaluating and managing risks from hazardous substances", I received the university's Arts School prize and went on to publish a paper based on my research in the Journal of the Institute of Conservation (Banks, 2015). For this 6-week placement, which formed part of my MA, I planned, designed and implemented an investigation into hazardous substances in objects held in the EBC. Through object research, a collection review, object surveys and risk assessments I was able to make recommendations for improved handling and storage of specimens in the collection, to draft a set of Standard Operating Procedures for use by EBC staff and volunteers and to successfully present my work at the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections' (SPNHC) annual conference – ‘Historic Collections: Future Resources’ (Banks & Nesbitt, 2014).
