Masters Thesis - Impacts of Harvesting on Brine Shrimp (Artemia franciscana) in Great Salt Lake, UT I determined the commercial harvesting of brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) cysts in Great Salt Lake, UT acts as a selective pressure, which has resulted in evolutionary changes in the population over time (Sura and Belovsky 2016).

Aug 2009 - May 2011
Under the guidance of a graduate student, I examined the role of introduced Pacific salmon in transporting contaminants into Great Lakes tributaries. Specifically, I evaluated uptake of contaminants by resident fish and the isotopic signatures of invertebrates and biofilms in salmonid and non-salmonid waters. I examined stomach contents and PCB and isotopic enrichment of tissue from resident fish.

Undergraduate Researcher in Belovsky Lab
-
Aug 2008 - May 2011
I studied how varying environmental conditions (water temperature, salinity, food concentration, food type) affect the foraging rate of different brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) life stages from the Great Salt Lake, UT, in collaboration with another undergraduate student.

Ten week summer research program with class modules and an independent research project. For my independent research project, I examined the effects of chemical cues from competitors, including an invasive species, and a potential predator on the feeding rate of a freshwater snail, Helisoma trivolvis.

I took the Coral Reef Ecology field course which involved course work and a two week trip to South Water Caye, Belize to conduct group research projects. Another undergraduate student and I studied the effects of artificial light illumination on ostracod density in nearshore seagrass beds. We presented a poster on our research at the 2010 Benthic Ecology Meeting in Wilmington, North Carolina.
