Anything you required to manage your hearing clinic, Sycle’s software platform provided. During my time there, ten developers morphed into forty-two, many of them recruited, vetted, hired and onboarded by me as I moved to Engineering Manager. I became the focal point for our development teams at Sycle. In my capacity, I also hired many other parts of our teams including, support for the developers, scrum masters, product owners, QA, test automation, UI, UX specialists and architects. My position made me a key component of the due diligence process when Sycle was acquired by Cochlear for $78 million.

Vancouver, Canada Area Every developer can make stuff, but some of us eventually wonder if we can make and ship our products. Spout was an idea based on what I had seen during my time at DDB. Spout was an idea based on what I had seen during my time at DDB. The idea was to build a product to promote brand awareness and engage audiences with rich, real-time social media experiences. It was called Tale. We started a project when Tim Hortons was giving away free donuts to their customers. We built an app where you could go around and get free donuts from Tim Hortons using an optimal driving route on Google maps. The people would tweet about the free donuts they got and so on - lots of fun. Then we did an unofficial social media campaign at TedX Vancouver using a similar concept to our Tim Hortons approach. But we had a problem. Our development process was too slow, and a greenfield opportunity became a crowded field. I learned two important things from this experience. One is that speed matters. And two, running a startup is not easy. Show less

I worked for Redstamp, a small boutique marketing agency, after 9 shot Golf. This position and the nature of the agency meant that I was exposed to a significant number of different technologies, platform solutions and code languages. I also got a crash course on being a manager, which proved valuable when I started later at Sycle.

Vancouver, BC I started working with the 9Shot Golf guys in 2013. The idea was to develop golf scheduling software. This experience was rich in lessons that would help me in the future. I built the initial product, and we began hiring people, then we went out to other golf establishments. That’s when the problem started. It turns out that lost of golf establishments have their way of doing things, and the way we chose wasn’t an easy fit. This experience was rich in lessons that would help me in the future. I built the initial product, and we began hiring people, then we went out to other golf establishments. That’s when the problem started. It turns out that lost of golf establishments have their way of doing things, and the way we chose wasn’t an easy fit. So lesson one is straight out of lean startup, talk to your customers first. Now, that wasn’t the end of it. We did a pivot to an even better idea: video golf swing analysis. A person would get their swing video, then upload it to our platform where a pro would analyze the swing. The pro could work with the video, add those drawing on it like in football analysis, and record voice. The company folded because they ran out of money before they got the valuation they were looking for. So the other lessons here were, had we simply developed it to work without the browser, we would have cut development time by three months and the associated expenses. And you could also say that you don’t get to choose your valuation when you need money. While I was there, I managed a team, set project timetables, and worked with a variety of tech, all of which helped me as my career continued to develop. Show less

Vancouver, Canada Area This is a dream job for some. High pressure, high performance and high expectations. It was here that I learned the power of design and detail. (2012 Digital Agency of the Year & 2012 Interactive Agency of the Year) DDB won awards for their design because they took it down to the pixel. Everything was checked and refined. Most developers never think about this level of detail, but those five pixels that aren’t just right will bother the audience. It will be wrong somehow, and they won’t know why. It’s these little details that help shape the entire experience. This shaped my views around design and clarity in code. During my time there, I managed, deployed, built and maintained multiple software projects. I worked on a team of three developers on websites like bcplace.com, ausenco.com and many more. Show less

My first time at EA was in the QA department. I spent my time going through the basketball games and making sure there wasn’t any funny stuff in the crowd. You might be surprised what might turn up in the crowd in these games before release. I also had to go through details where legs get crossed and stuff that wasn’t natural or realistic.
