Shawna is incredibly personable. She gets to know her clients wants and goals at the onset to deliver an outstanding product. In addition to deliverables, she is thoughtful about how she builds relationships with her clients and team members.

Together with Kenneth Phillips (Curator, Aerospace Science) and Devin Waller (Exhibit Project Manager, Phase III), I enthusiastically offer this letter of recommendation for Shawna McLean as an outstanding candidate for a position of leadership on your senior management team. Over the past eight months, we worked closely with Shawna in her capacity as Executive Director of Flight Path Learning Center & Museum to facilitate repairs on our DC-3 aircraft, currently on loan to Flight Path Museum & Learning Center at Los Angeles International Airport. This rare and historic artifact will eventually move back to the California Science Center for display in our future Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center—an all-new wing devoted to aeronautics and space exploration. This working relationship forms the basis for our comments on Shawna’s abilities. Shawna first demonstrated responsible ethical leadership when, eight months ago, she notified us immediately upon learning about damage to the fabric ailerons on the aircraft. Our DC-3 is displayed outdoors adjacent to an active taxiway at LAX and strict security regulations mandate a personal escort from the interior of the Museum to the aircraft. After first inspecting the DC-3 under Shawna’s personal escort, she worked closely with us to develop a comprehensive plan for repairs requiring regular visits to Flight Path over a period of several months. Shawna next provided strong administrative leadership for Flight Path by tuning the schedules of its all-volunteer staff to provide us with access to the aircraft according to the demands of our schedules while at the same time operating the Museum without disruption to its guests. Shawna then provided strong policy leadership by instituting rules regarding the care and handling of artifacts that comply with the spirit of loan agreements that are generally accepted in the museum field and, before leaving Flight Path, laid the groundwork for our two institutions to continue collaborating to care for the DC-3 in the future. In that regard she arranged several visits with aircraft restoration specialists to assess the condition of the DC-3, connected us with operations staff at LAX as well as board members and trustees who can help us preserve the aircraft at LAX until it returns to the Science Center. Shawna’s leadership skills, collaborative spirit, and effective management of a lean organization have been a positive force during her tenure at Flight Path. We are confident that she will make an excellent addition to your management team.
