Under direction of a Battalion Chief, Fire Lieutenant is a special rank within the Derry Fire Department with the purpose to provide first-line command over and emergency response unit, e.g., Engine Company, Ladder Truck, Rescue Company, Medic Unit.A Fire Lieutenant is in command of an incident until a superior officer arrives. He/she is responsible for proper placement of equipment and assignment of personnel under his/her supervision. Work is carried out according to general department procedures, but discretion and independent judgment are regularly exercised. Further, the Fire Lieutenant supervises firefighters through an organized chain of command, providing direction and feedback as needed. Duties require thorough knowledge of firefighting practices and ability to plan and direct the work of firefighters under hazardous conditions. A Fire Lieutenant leads the performance of physical tasks involved in firefighting and takes responsibility for the protection of life and property. The work also involves responsibility for the maintenance of station equipment and the fire station as ordered by the Fire Captain or Battalion Chief. A Fire Lieutenant is responsible for a team of firefighters, providing coaching and mentoring and managing training and professional development activities for that team. With the exception of station responsibility, the classes of Fire Captain and Fire Lieutenant are identical with respect to the activities of a fire company at the Derry Fire Department.
