I had the pleasure of working with Ms. Stewart for five years. During this time, Ms. Stewart demonstrated strong leadership and collaborating skills. I often sought out her guidance whenever I ran into a hiccup, wanted to talk through a difficult concept that I was trying to work through, and/or needed some encouragement. I also learned a great deal from observing how she worked with others to complete major research projects and grant proposals--many of which she was awarded. She also organized enrichment and community-building opportunities that I benefitted from immensely, including a co-worker reading group/book club. Additionally, Ms. Stewart is a caring and compassionate person who is a joy to work with while also being the type of co-worker and leader that one would want with them in the trenches. I wholeheartedly recommend her in all her pursuits.

I’ve had the honor and privilege to be a first-year student in the class of Mrs. Shawanda Stewart. She has held the distinction of Associate Professor at Huston-Tillotson University for the past seven years although recently she was appointed the Department Chair of English. As her previous student, it is my view that Mrs. Stewart is an extremely professional professor who cares about student success inside and outside the classroom. Mrs. Stewart has published and presented some fascinating pieces over the last ten years, particularly in the area of first-year student success. Her numerous publications on the topic have been well-received and show her commitment to improving the student experience at a fundamental level. Mrs. Stewart believes in excellence when teaching and that student success must go beyond the walls of a classroom. During my first year, she was more than a professor; she shares her knowledge, drive, and passion with every student she comes in contact with. Her passion for minority students’ success has allowed me to become the exceptional young lady I believe I am today. Since January 2015, Mrs. Stewart has encouraged everyone in my class to do exceedingly well both in and out of the classroom. Outside the classroom, she took the initiative to, in 2016, reestablish the Golden Key International Honor Society on Huston-Tillotson’s campus. This is just one way she proves her complete devotion to students’ academic success as well as overall well roundedness. In spite of these formidable gifts, she is a humble and approachable person who loves to share her extensive knowledge with others, her students in particular. She not only believes that the students learn from her but also that she learns from us every day as well. Professor Stewart has worked closely with various departments at Huston-Tillotson University to obtain grants for the professional and financial benefit of the students. As a former student of Huston-Tillotson, those are two aspects that affect the retention of students which is essential for the growth and continuity of small HBCUs like Huston-Tillotson University. The University has benefited greatly from her drive to get resources to students that will not only remove financial burdens while persisting but will also aid in student placement in jobs that will kickstart their careers after graduation. It is my honor and privilege to recommend Shawanda Stewart for any position she might pursue. Regards, Moya Reid
