      In 2003, I founded Athene Offices. Athene catered to success-oriented businesses eager to improve their efficiency and competitive edge. We provided high-end, fully furnished offices and meeting spaces with a high-tech infrastructure, and we offered a full complement of business-related services.Essentially, Athene offered all of the elements that allowed businesses and their employees to be highly productive and to focus on what they do best. I provided informal mentoring / coaching services to several of our clients over the years, and our staff members were all highly motivated to fulfil our promise as a company that truly cared about its clients. I enjoyed building Athene and am proud of the standards we maintained and the quality of clients that we attracted. Athene’s greatest gift to me is that I learned far more than I ever wanted to know about running a company during the worst recession in 50 years. The first Athene Centre opened in early 2004, and was immediately highly profitable. High end office space was very difficult to secure in Calgary at that time, so a combination of lengthy searches, competitive negotiations, and long build-outs meant our second and third Centres opened in late 2007 and early 2009, bringing the total leasable area in Athene’s portfolio to 170 offices in over 50,000 sq feet of premium office space. Anyone familiar with the Calgary real estate market will immediately realize what a disaster that was - the entire commercial market fell apart in early 2008. For a period of several months, we were losing in excess of $80k/month. I learned much about survival and had to overcome my own hesitation to invest heavily in new marketing strategies, branding, and advertising. I did, and we not only survived but thrived in late 2009 through 2012.On June 1, 2012, I sold Athene to the Regus Group - the largest executive office company in the world with over 1200 locations in 550 cities in 95 countries.

      I joined Minerva, a computer services firm founded by Revett Eldred in 1985, just as it was starting to gain momentum. There were many bumps and trials along the way during Minerva's rapid growth from 10 to 250 employees in three cities - Calgary, Vancouver, and Dallas – which meant that we all ended up earning our MBAs on the job instead of in the classroom. I joined as the Controller and later became the VP of Corporate Services, which included management of the administration, financial, HR and internal IT divisions of Minerva’s head office. I also provided oversight and training to the branch offices, and served as one of the five-member Senior Executive Team for the company. During our rapid growth, we earned a highly-coveted Canada Award for Business Excellence, as well as two Microsoft awards for Best Applications using Microsoft Technology. Minerva is considered one of Calgary’s high-tech success stories. We hit every benchmark most companies hope for and we were cited several times in various magazines on their "Fastest Growing” lists including Fastest Growing 100, Fastest Growing 50, and Canada’s Best Bosses.We were grossing $30M when we sold Minerva to a telephone company in 1998.
