As part of a small team I helped to create an engaging ’24-hour guide to Brussels’ which would not only highlight some of the sights on offer in the city, but also discuss the plight of the European Eel. Working closely with the Sustainable Eels Group, the Guillemot Press and Plymouth University, this was a collaborative project in which I had to research the subject, write content, aid the design process and assist in the final edits and publishing of the guide. • Sep 2017 - Jun 2018

As part of a small team of students I work both collaboratively and independently to provide seminars and lectures to GCSE and A level students who may, or may not be, thinking of pursuing an English degree. As there is often mixed ability and mixed interests in the groups, the days that I plan are always engaging and creative, be it getting the students to workshop their own ideas to having a previous Doctor Who read Wilfred Owen’s poetry- I always work to ensure they are a fun day, as opposed to a daunting one.

    • Student Ambassador
      • Jul 2017 - Jun 2018

Working as an ambassador, I am the face of the University and therefore responsible for maintaining its reputation. From this role I have gained excellent communication skills and am able to confidently interact with both members of the public and the academics who run my course. Punctuality is key for this role as applicants can arrive at any time that suits them and therefore I have to make sure to be available for all of their needs at any time.

Alongside the applications department of Plymouth University, I have been involved in the takeover of their Instagram and Snapchat accounts. I first did this at the Port Eliot Literature festival and have done it on other occasions since, such as the Totnes Christmas Markets. In doing this, I am aiming to give a student insight to university life and encourage applicants to apply to the university. I therefore have to source entertaining and intriguing posts which creatively highlight what a diverse community surrounds Plymouth, whilst upholding a professional manner and showing myself to be a good ambassador of the University. I aim to have an organised schedule for the posts, so that people aren’t inundated with pictures, and so that people have a chance to see what’s going on for longer, as without having the posts lined up then the events can be over very quickly.

I undertook a one-week placement at the Plymouth Herald office where I wrote a variety of articles from a ‘Freshers guide to Plymouth’ to a UFO cover story. Having only a limited experience of journalism I engaged with up to 6 written pieces a day and maintained an efficient work ethic to make sure that I met the deadlines given. Alongside this I also went out into the public as an ambassador for the Newspaper alongside other members of the team for research and interview purposes. Whilst working for Sainsbury’s, I was based on the checkouts. From here I provided swift and friendly customer service to ensure that visitors had a great and easy experience whilst in the store. From this job I have abundant experience in cash handling from flighting tills during the shift, to organising the flights for the store close. Whilst working this job I was quickly promoted to supervisor and working in the customer service desk. In both of these roles I was responsible for dealing with customer queries and complaints, and also liaising with members of other store departments to ensure optimum customer satisfaction.

As part of small journalistic team, I helped to produce a daily newspaper at the Port Eliot literature festival. We had eight hours a day to interview, review, write and edit so it was necessary to maintain a high pace of work whilst making sure it was of a high quality. It was a challenge, but it really helped to boost my confidence, as we played close attention to the publishing process and got ourselves into the public eye. I performed interviews with an array of acts and therefore developed my interview and communication skills, whilst representing the Guillemot Press and Plymouth University.

    • Receptionist
      • Sep 2012 - Jul 2015

In this administrative role I was responsible for an array of tasks, including receiving the payments of dance and singing lessons, customer orders, recording sessions and a variety of other services. Important aspects of this role included inputting customer information into a CRM database, creating posters for events, sending emails with important information, dealing with current and potential customers over the phone and in person and provide a high level of customer service. From this experience I am competent and confident in liaising with customers to provide a great experience.
