The English/Spanish Intercambio is a free student-led language exchange program that addresses the English and Spanish language barriers that exist among residents living in Baltimore City. The program has two-hour sessions on Saturday afternoons. During the first hour, English-proficient high school students guide community members with limited English proficiency through assignments designed to help them practice their reading, writing and conversational skills in English. During the second hour, the roles reverse and community members help high schoolers practice their conversational Spanish outside the classroom. At the end of sessions, participants share constructive criticism through surveys and discussion. During these discussions, participants have voiced that they attended the program because they wanted to communicate with their children enrolled in school, to talk with community leaders, and to obtain better jobs. We had received positive responses from the community as well as Zeke Cohen, the Baltimore City Councilman of the Highlandtown district, as he personally congratulated and thanked us for our services. This is how I knew the program was working. Following this, the core team and I applied and won a total of $3500 in grant money all used to buy resources such as workbooks that structurally advanced our efforts to provide practice spaces for both languages. The program continues to operate under student leadership today. Show less
