My work involves working within a team on an Acute Medical Unit that consist of 48 beds, 14 of these are monitored. The unit is merged with the Accident and Emergency department. We receive acutely unwell adults from the age of 18 years upwards. Once patients are stabilised we transfer to other wards. The patients I care for are diverse and on occasion complex cases. I have developed knowledge to care for a vast range of medical conditions such as Cardiac, Respiratory, Renal, Gastro, Endocrine, oncology, haematology, neurology. My skills involve taking routine bloods / HIV screen, MRSA screening / wound swabs, ECGs, cannulation, catheterisation, NG /Ryle tube insertion, manage patients on BIPAP/CPAP, also HICK / PICC lines. Administer Blood products, IV additives /oral medications. Asses pressure areas, monitor blood sugar/ketones, make referrals within the multi-disciplinary team, dress wounds, remove stitches, escalate a deteriorating patient to the Critical Outreach Team, pain management. I also have co-ordinated the ward on occasion, and just completed my mentorship course, as well as a preceptorship study day. I strive to keep my practice evidence based, and adhere at all times to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) professional code of conduct. Show less
