I worked with Ms. Whitaker for 2.5 years, supervising her when she was Associate Director for the Health Professions Advisory Program (HPAP) in Yale University’s Undergraduate Career Services. This role required Ms. Whitaker to combine both academic advising and career counseling, while also managing several outreach programs operated by the office. It is a high volume environment, engaging with students and alumni of all ages wishing to enter medical school, or other health professions programs, and necessitates the ability to learn a wide range of information concerning admissions policies for these types of educational pursuits. There are many unique nuances to the curricular options students can choose for their pre-medical requirements and the advice given to individual students can vary based on many factors. One of the best characteristics Ms. Whitaker continually displayed was the willingness to ask questions if she needed clarification when advising a student. Many people in our types of positions sometimes take for granted their knowledge of academics, and perhaps it is Ms. Whitaker’s scientific training that provided the impetus for her asking questions, but in my opinion it is a highly valued skill because it shows she respected the work she was doing and wanted to provide the students with all possible plans of action to achieve their goals. From a professional standpoint, Ms. Whitaker was a great addition not only to HPAP, but to the office in general fir she was always willing to assist a colleague and has excellent ideas when it comes to planning programs and events. I most enthusiastically recommend Ms. Whitaker and know she will be a wonderful addition to any professional situation that is fortunate enough to hire her.
