Supervisor: Dr. David W. ShoesmithA by-product of the use of nuclear energy is the generation of spent fuel. As of 2014 roughly 2.51 million bundles of used CANDU fuel are being stored at reactor sites. In Canada, spent fuel waste will be buried 500 m deep in either granitic rock or sedimentary clay deposits. This approach is based on a system of multiple barriers. The primary barrier to radionuclide release is the metallic container consisting of a carbon steel vessel with an outer corrosion resistant Cu coating. While copper is thermodynamically stable under anoxic conditions and should undergo minimal corrosion, the consequences of container failure must be considered. Within a failed container, two corrosion fronts will be established, one on the fuel surface and a second on the inner surface of the steel vessel. My Ph.D. thesis project focused on the corrosion behaviour of the inner carbon steel vessel used within the proposed waste containers for Canada's spent nuclear fuel. Several areas of interest were investigated including; (i) the effect of hydrogen peroxide on steel corrosion and its ability to passivate the iron surface, (ii) the effect of groundwater anions expected to be present within the saturated groundwaters of the deep geologic repository including chloride, carbonate, and sulphate, as well as (iii) a long term investigation of the effects of anoxic groundwater solutions on the corrosion behaviour of steel and the composition of the corrosion products produced in simulated geological repository scenarios. This work was accomplished through a combination of corrosion and electrochemical experiments supported by a wide variety of surface analytical techniques. Show less
