I am a member of the Washington Ireland Program's Class of 2017. I am one of thirty young Northern Irish/ Irish leaders taking part on a program where leadership and service are essential to the curriculum. The program has 3 phases: pre-DC, DC and post-DC. Pre and Post DC are generally more focused on service opportunities and making a real impact in our communities. It involves 30 hours of service before we leave for DC and 90 hours when we get home. Whilst in DC we also take part in service projects to help us understand the community in which we will be living. The DC phase is an 8 week program where each student will be on work placement and undergoing service projects in the DC area. The program entails discussion series, speaker series, 6 week internship, host family experience and opportunities to grow professionally but also as an individual.

I gained administration skills through this internship. My role in the SBNI was to help complete equality screening of the core policy and procedures. To do this I had to communicate with other companies to gain more research around the topics to ensure the inter-agency screening was possible. I gained computing skills through the work I done in the SBNI. During the internship I had to complete research, an equality screening and communicating with agencies to ensure full equality could be met. I gained time keeping skills.

Built confidence in managing large groups, learned how to provide appropriate assistance to children of different ages (from 4 to 16 years) and learnt how to adapt to work with people with all different types of backgrounds. This program gave children the ability to gain confidence and used the Arts as a method to do this.
