A pivotal beginning to my career in Leadership, this position launched my passion for outdoor recreation-based learning. With complete responsibility for the program I developed a number of relevant skills, including: - Planning, coordinating and leading multi-week outdoor adventure programs for youth that included: Hiking, White Water Rafting, Kayaking, Rock Climbing, Surfing, Horseback Riding, Zip Lining and Mountain Biking. Each program was designed to provide campers with a rewarding wilderness experience while learning life skills, environmental awareness, animal safety and campground etiquette. - Facilitation of daily tasks, such as driving long distances, assigning and overseeing campsite responsibilities, meal preparation, nightly entertainment, and scheduling of all activities, including those operated by third parties; - Ability to creatively problem solve any issues, as all of our trips were in remote, unpredictable environments within the Southwestern United States. Flexibility, patience, and a positive attitude were necessary attributes for successfully overcoming any obstacles; - Camper safety and satisfaction shared equal priority and required competency in organization, group dynamics and behavior management. A passion for outdoor adventure and a fun, responsible attitude proved fundamental in managing these challenges to ensure each camper had a rich and rewarding experience; - The success of the Adventure Camp Program continued to accomplish widespread attention during my 2 years as Coordinator, and even with the addition of trips we were consistently operating at full capacity. A benefit to this success was that the YMCA of Southern California had invited us to exclusively attend their multi-camp program on Catalina Island, establishing a new relationship between interstate YMCA’s.
