I am working as Consultant Anaesthetist at Burjeel Hospital, which is the only private, hospital providing tertiary level care in Abu Dhabi. It is 220-bedded hospital with all major surgical specialties. It is a centre of excellence for Bariatric, Obstetric, Oncology and Major Spine and Orthopaedic procedures. My regular sessions include providing Peri-operative care for patients undergoing Bariatric, Obstetric, Major Spine and Joint Replacements, complex vascular surgery, cancer and plastic breast surgery, Ophthalmic, Orthopaedic, Urology and lower Gastro-intestinal surgery. I am in charge for quality control and clinical governance. I have established guidelines for Labour Analgesia, Maternal collapse, Post partum Haemorrhage and acute pain in PACU and Ward. I have taken special interest in setting up Difficult Airway trolleys in OR, PACU and remote locations. I have also given Simulation training in Airway Management for my specialist anaesthetic colleagues. I do lead and take part in the Pre-operative Assessment Clinic, which is a busy clinic assessing over 45-50 out patients in a day. I have established pre operative screening questionnaire to improve the quality and reduce the time of pre operative assessment in this Hospital. I was a Consultant Anaesthetist at HEFT (Heart of England Foundation Trust) with a special interest in Bariatric, Upper GI anaesthesia and trauma anaesthesia In my fixed sessions, I have delivered anaesthesia for specialties like Thoracic, Bariatric, Upper GI and vascular surgery and I have been involved in managing complex surgical cases including Lobectomy, Pneumonectomy, VATS, Oesophagectomy, Gastrectomy, Whipples Procedure and Bariatric Weight loss procedures. I had regular vascular sessions anaesthetising patients for endovascular aneurysm repairs in hybrid theatre settings, Carotid endarterectomy and major arterial bypass. I joined Stoke-on-Trent School of Anaesthesia, which is one of major training Centre in West Midlands region. In this Stoke-on-Trent School of Anaesthesia, I have been trained in all subspecialties of anaesthesia including obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatrics, cardiothoracic, intensive care, neurosurgical and pain management. I was trained in the two big teaching hospitals of the Midlands region in England, each of which handles close to 4000 deliveries per year. North Staffordshire hospital at Stoke-on-Trent is major trauma centre for the region apart from being tertiary referral centre for Cardiac, neurosurgical and faciomaxillary surgeries. I underwent 12 months of advanced training in Upper GI/Bariatric anaesthesia at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. During this one year, I gained confidence and experience in anaesthetizing patients for different approaches for Oesophagectomy (Ivor-Lewis, left thoraco-abdominal or trans-hiatal) Gastrectomy, Whipples, Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication, Lap cholecystectomy, adrenelectomy, pancreatic necrosectomy and drainage of pancreatic abscess. I understand the principle involved in resuscitating these patients and optimising their physiology prior to and during surgery. I relish working closely with surgical colleagues throughout the care of these challenging patients. These case mix have given me a good experience to anaesthetize patients with cardio- respiratory problems, chronic renal impairment, patients on immuno suppressive or chemotherapeutic agents, post-radiotherapy, difficult intubation, narcotic dependence etc. This training has helped me to perfect a range of generic skills like perioperative optimization of high-risk patient, advanced lung isolation techniques, Fibreoptic bronchoscopy, Jet ventilation and postoperative analgesic techniques like Thoracic epidural/Paravertebral block/TAP block Birmingham Heartlands Hospital is also a center of excellence for bariatric surgery.
