For Clinical Practice 2.2 Mental Health posting, I was posted to the 'recovery ward'. Overall, IMH CP 2.2 attachment has been an eye-opening and enriching one. Institute of Mental Health being one of the very first specialized posting has taught me many new things. Being posted at a recovery ward, I had the great opportunity to educate myself on how the life of a psychiatric nurse looks like. I also learnt the different types of roles a psychiatric nurse in a recovery ward has. It was very interesting and fascinating how the clients would come up to take their own medications rather than the nurses serving them at their bedside. The most important takeaway for me would be the fact that clients with mental health conditions should be treated with patience and compassion although it may be difficult at times. They should be treated like one of us because at the end of the day, their conditions do not define them. They too can be as independent as us with regards to their activities of daily living (ADLs) and many more. Show less

Overall, although clinical practice (CP) 2.1 was very tough and arduous, it has been a pleasant experience. The jump from CP 1.2 to 2.1 was significant and although it was very difficult to adapt to it initially, I have learnt many things throughout CP 2.1. I gained knowledge about my patients and the investigations done relating to my patient’s diagnosis. I have also learnt how nursing is like in the real world; working in a multidisciplinary team, communicating my colleagues, performing tasks on the patients etc.. CP 2.1 has provided me with new knowledge, which will help me immensely after I graduate. Although I have made mistakes during CP 2.1, I have learnt from them and I will surely improve myself to prepare for CP 2.2. In conclusion, CP 2.1 has been an overwhelming yet fruitful attachment. For my very first clinical practice (CP), I was posted to a geriatric ward. It has been a fruitful journey of nerve-wrecking first day at work to joyous smiles. Behind all the arduous hours of completing skills and first-hand experience of taking care of real patients, I am more than grateful to have been given the opportunity to work at a clinical setting. CP 1.2 has taught me so many things. Schools will teach what they can, but sometimes it differs when it comes to real settings such as hospitals. So many skills taught to me during CP 1.2 was completely different from what I have learnt in school, but I am glad I got to learn them. Apart from painstakingly completing my skills, I also got to learn how the life of a professional nurse is like. For instance, roll call first things first to summarise the information of all the patients in the ward followed by the report passing. It was great learning how these routines work. Overall, I got to learn so many things and even had the chance to implement them. Show less
