Final proyect of the Bachelor's Degree (Optical properties of atmospheric aerosols in León, Spain)

In this work we have studied the size distributions and optical properties of aerosols in the city of León, from March 1, 2016 to February 28, 2017. The databases which have been used are: i) the interval of hours with the sun elevation above 10º; ii) the particle size distributions measured with an optical counter (PCASP) and scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and iii) the particulate material concentration (PM10) from the air quality network of Castilla y León.

This research project is based on the study of the elimination of antibiotics and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in wastewater treatment processes.Our first task was evaluated the different methods regarding the initial process of the sample and choose the appropriate method for the processing of the samples, residual water, algae and trout meat, extracting the antibiotics from the samples for subsequent chromatographic analysis by HPCL and by q-PCR for the study of antibiotic resistance genes. The study includes the analysis a volume of 1 liter of water from the influent and another from the algae birreactor. Two other samples are prepared from the influent sample and a prefilter is made to remove excess material, then the first sample returns to a filter with a thinner filter of 0.45 µm or 0.21 µm, we collect the result and freeze the sample for DNA analysis.With the other sample of the prefiltered influent, the SPE cartridge (solid phase extraction) was prepared, with which the antibiotics could be analyzed.The one-liter sample of the algae bioreactor is used to obtain three types of data, the result of the algae absorbed antibiotics, effluent antibiotics and DNA studies. The samples sometimes show a prefiltration, one of about 20 µm and another of 0.45 µm, the first sample is filtered again and the result is frozen for DNA study, the second sample is used to perform the study of the sludge it contains Algae and other effluent water In both, an SPE cartridge was prepared for analysis in HPCL (high efficiency liquid chromatography), with this method it was possible to study tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, macrolides and penicillins, all of them antibiotics of human interest, the appearance of antibiotic resistance is related to environmental processes altered by anthropic activities. Water quality laboratory technician

During the intership I was focused in the analysis of the different water lines and sludge of the sewage treatment plant in León, as well as the analysis of the spills of the different industries in the area, in order to comply with the regulations. When performing the water analysis, we did measurements of the electrical conductivity and ph, also tests to determine the COD, BOD5 and the total nitrogen test (N.T.K). It is worth noting the familiarity with the ISO 17025 standard, which establishes the requirements that have been realized in the test laboratories and calibrations thereof. As well as with the ISO 9000 and 14000 standards, of quality and environmental, respectively. Show less
