Salford Racing Formula Student is a student-run and managed group at the University of Salford that is affiliated with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and sponsored by the International Engineering firm Morson Group. Every year Formula Students designs a formula-style race car to compete at Silverstone circuit in an international competition against other Universities. Over the course of the year, the team is organized into teams that are responsible for designing and testing separate systems of the car. This process is done alongside other groups and all must confirm to the rules set out by the governing body - The IMechE As the lead team member of the Dynamics Team, it has been my responsibility to set design and performance targets, design and analyse the basic suspension geometry and lead a small team of engineers through analysis and manufacture. This includes components such as uprights, wheel hubs, bellcranks, wishbones, and rods. Over the course of the year, this project involved extensive research, along with refining skills in 3D modeling using software such as Solidworks and Fusion 360. Analysis of the designs was done using simulation analysis tools from these applications. The development of these models has also included the use of generative design and topological optimization. To ensure that the final dynamic systems fulfills the needs of the team and vehicle, constant communication between other Lead team members and management has been essential in ensuring the completion of team goals. This was also important in order to produce a safe, robust vehicle that complies with the rules and regulations of the IMechE Formula Student program. This year-long design and manufacturing process culminated in July when all formula student teams, including international teams, meet at the Silverstone GP circuit to compete in a rigorous scrutineering process, followed by a challenging set of static, and dynamic events.
