Lumina is a world-leading psychometrics and software company with 3000 qualified practitioners and >500,000 users worldwide.I reported to the CEO of Lumina, who gave me freedom to act on my own initiative and use my knowledge of business and high-performing teams to improve Lumina’s execution. I established the Programme Office, using MS Project and new business processes to coordinate the team.Coordination – Introduced Objectives and Key Results (OKRs), similar to KPIs, to translate the business strategy into concrete actions for each staff member.Scrum Master in the software team’s Agile development process, refining best practices with the IT Manager. Managed the JIRA issue tracker and introduced tools for defining project scope, governance and budgets.New Processes – Established project reviews for continuous improvement, as well as:- A proposal costing process, focussing on opportunity costs, ROI and budgeting.- A New Product Introduction (NPI) process, allowing for parallel development of software, user experience, translations and marketing, where before these happened serially.- Data-based decision-making with PowerBI.Data Science - Investigated the statistics around psychometrics and IQ, particularly the effects of fat-tailed distributions on Lumina’s research.Wrote a Python Monte-Carlo simulation to model bivariate Gaussian distributions and Gaussian-Pareto joint distributions. This highlighted flaws in using Pearson correlation and Prime Component Analysis (PCA), leading to a more robust approach using Mutual Information.Innovation - Co-developed a three-day course on Innovation, contributing content around ‘antifragility’, Black Swans, Xerox PARC, ARPA, Apollo and JSOC under Stanley McChrystal. The pilot course received very positive feedback and I implemented all of the content at Lumina, introducing ‘10% Time’, prototyping and user testing.
