My PhD project investigated the potential deep geothermal resource in the Upper Devonian sandstone aquifer beneath eastern Glasgow. Within this multidisciplinary research project, I have investigated the effects of palaeoclimate and topography on Glasgow's heat flow dataset; collected and modelled field data from a new gravity survey of eastern Glasgow; and carried out X-CT and X-RD analysis to determine hydraulic and petrophysical properties of target aquifer rocks.

Funded by EPSRC-CESI, this work assessed the scope for repurposing onshore hydrocarbon wells in the UK for geothermal energy production and storage. A nationwide site screening survey of potential candidate sites was conducted, then, the extent and magnitude of the UK’s potential geothermal resource in sedimentary basins across the country was mapped. Following the selection of case studies, the potential geothermal resource at these sites was assessed.

Heat Data Analyst on Scotland's Heat Map
-
Mar 2015 - Sep 2015
Student internship with the Scottish Government. I primarily worked on data collection, data validation and data analysis involved in the 2015 update of Scotland's Heat Map. In this position I developed my knowledge of GIS software, assessed large databases and communicated successfully with relevant stakeholders. It furthered my understanding of the renewable heat sector in Scotland and how the Heat Map tool can be used to identify potential projects for development.
