      As deasy/penner has grown, so has my team. We've build out our social media presence across platforms, with an emphases on Facebook and Instagram, with followings rivaling Los Angeles' other top independent firms. Our re-branded website now receives an average of 20k page views a week. Our PR wing consistently garners our properties hits from the likes of Curbed, the New York Times and Architectural Digest. Our native advertising across on various digital media platforms - which I personally write and produce - continually out perform those of our competitors by large margins. And our marketing brand of great, clean, impactful design is as indelible to DPP as the high-end architecture we represent. In 2018, deasy/penner&partners acquired Podley Properties - a firm twice our size - to become Deasy Penner Podley.       Prior to starting deasy/penner, George Penner had spent a decade plus in the advertising world, including as Senior Vice President to Deutsch Inc., which gained significant momentum during his tenure— winning Adweek’s “Agency of the Year” three years in a row. Where Mike Deasy brought 30 years of real estate experience to the table, George brought his advertising genius. As a result, the hallmark of deasy/penner has been as much its superlative advertising and marketing, as it's luxury and architectural listings portfolio.From day one, George noted and appreciated my eye for design and attention to detail. He took me under his wing, cultivating my instincts and sharing with me his vision for the DPP brand. His faith in me soon grew to the point that he had me trained to take over production of the ads and all additional marketing materials. Around this time, the company - bolstered by the recovering market and its growing reputation as a high-end boutique agency - began to grow in size. We brought on more agents. We opened more offices. I built out a marketing team. Together with this team I tackled the changing landscape of real estate marketing, building from scratch our Social Media presence.       After a few months, I was promoted to Marketing Coordinator, wherein I did pretty much everything I'd done before, with the addition of website management, ad layout and some minor design work. Then, when the real estate market began to tank, the company downsized, letting every employee but myself go. So, on top of my marketing duties, I answered phones, made coffee, ordered supplies, received checks, dispersed checks, greeted clients, set up conference calls, ran errands, etc. In short, I did whatever I could to keep the gears churning, the wheels turning and the company moving through the market bust and the financial collapse.       I was hooked up with a job interview at deasy/penner by a friend who was working there at the time. The agency was less than a year old, had somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 agents and was operating out of a nondescript office space on the grittier end of Venice. They were looking for an ad traffic manager to liaise between the agents and their off-site designer team, and though entirely uninitiated in the marketing business, I'd accrued enough skills over my years working in the theatre to qualify for the position. I collected assets, I copy edited, I proofed, I did ad buys and I compiled listing presentations. It wasn't high art and it wasn't quantum physics. But it was a job, and I did it well enough to soon be moved to full time and, eventually, to get promoted. Show less

      Out of a pool of hundreds of applicants, I was selected to be one of a dozen participants in Warner Brother's Comedy Writers Workshop. It was the most talented group of piers I'd ever had, and it was nothing if not intimidating. But I learned tons about story structure and the world of episodic television. I studied, I dissected, I generated dozens of ideas, I whittled those down to one that I felt was at once specific, universally resonate, true to my own voice and values, while still being true to the the voice and tone of the show I was spec-ing. In the end, my script was selected to be given a table read for some guest show runners and I was granted meetings with Current and Development Network Executives. Show less

      In summer during college, I'd return home to Portland to teach theatre as a summer job. I worked with kids ranging in age from 6 to 18. I taught them voice, movement, improve, Shakespeare and dramatic structure. With many of my classes I would lead the students through writing exercises that would culminate in a piece of original theatre, which they would perform at the end of the camp session for their parents. Throughout this experience, I never ceased to be amazed by the transformative power of storytelling. There are few things as exciting as watching a group of 20 kids bringing their wild and unruly creativity together to tell a cohesive story. It's living proof of specificity leading to universality. I managed her calendar, transcribed notes, drove Tina to and from the airport, pulled quotes from large stacks of dense books based off vague descriptions of their underlying messages, and otherwise basked in her greatness.During this time I studied rhetorical tools, the historic basis of Shakespeare's historical plays, more voice work, more movement work, more text work, Lecoq clown work and still more esoteric yet highly effective acting techniques.       As a kid I loved movies. Every week I'd open the Entertainment section of The Oregonian and read each description, each review, the showtimes for each theatre, the box office rankings, studying the advertisements. When my dad would take me to the video store, I'd spend as much time as he'd allow, perusing every section, making mental checklists of every movie I wanted to see. I'd use a two VCR contraption to make copies of my favorites and watch them over and over. So, when it came time for me to get a job as a kid, video store clerk was obviously at the top of my list. And when, in High School, I was lucky enough to land a job at my local store, I dove into it with enthusiasm. I curated collections, I selected rare gems to play over the in-store TVs, I memorized the names of all the regulars. I soon became the guy customers went to for recommendations, the if-you-liked-this-you'll-love-this guy, the I-can't-remember-the-title-but-it's-about-a-this-vague-set-of-circumstances guy. Trivia: - On New Years Day, 1999, The Oregonian put me on the cover of the paper as a featured part of their story highlighting the various occupations of 99 Oregonians. - I was working alone one night when the store was held up at knife-point. The robber tied me up with speaker wire and made-off with all of $67. - Impulse Video still exists -- one of the few independent brick-and-mortar video stores remaining in Portland. Show less
