Sean helped me onboard to RevSys as a new engineering manager and has been a great role model for engineering management at Indeed. Many people offered advice and were kind to me as I was getting started, but Sean went above and beyond. He met with me weekly, would slack me during meetings to explain things, would forward me emails that he knew I wasn't on, and would always make time to answer any questions I had. For example, he was the lead on the first interview I gave at Indeed. He walked me through expectations on the Resume Deep Dive interview, explained how to use the tools to fill out the interview feedback, and went over general expectations. Sean also had great insight into indeed's culture, telling me the positives of being bottom up (creativity, empowerment, happier engineers), the difficulties of coordinating in that environment (E.g., "Unfortunately, we cant get to that for six months"), how we overpromise on what we can provide feature-wise. Sean made a major impact on RevSys as the TDM of the IX, BAM, and IPA teams. He stands out as a pillar to the IX team, which has had a revolving door of short term PdMs or no PdM over the past 3 years. Sean has brought stability to the team and led them to complete major projects like Promotions, which moved 15% of ad central traffic to the wall and made dramatic UX improvements for users. He did this while also dramatically improving the quality of the codebase with projects such as a frontend migration to typescript, a rewrite of backend error handling, and preparing to get rid of Astromech. But I was most impressed of all when Sean demonstrated an Indeed value I heard during my interviews: "We don't leave people behind". He championed a UX developer (who was not his direct report) for promotion and to have a permanent spot on the IX team. This developer was a key contributor who wrote the frontend for promotions and Sean knew he was frustrated and feeling stuck at his current level at Indeed. So Sean built up a base of support with our group sr director, Lorin's manager, a senior UX director, and myself. He made sure we coordinated with each other to build Lorin's slides and also planned to have Lorin report to me in April, after I took over the IX team from him.

In our industry, we often talk about unicorns. People that have a rare combination of skills that make them extremely effective and impactful for their teams. Sean is a unicorn. Sean builds strong relationships with his employees that allows him to provide powerful coaching moments for their growth. I have observed Sean promote and alter the trajectory of many employees here at Indeed. The effective relationships he establishes extend across the organization in ways that enable him to uniquely solve problems at a wider scale. He does this while remaining extremely hands-on technical... allowing him to dive deep into problems the teams are facing, provide constructive feedback on proposed designs to highlight and address risks, and contribute code alongside individual contributors. I would value the opportunity to work with Sean at any time.
