The departmental functions were diverse and included: CNS/ATM technologies and equipage, ACARS, RNP/RNAV approach/departure procedure development, low visibility operations, HGS, air traffic management, EGPWS, RAAS, RVSM, airfield operations, aircraft performance, route planning, Centralized Load Planning, weight and balance engineering, fuel conservation and fuel cost reduction, MEL, technical publications, charting and navigation bases, Dispatch and its associated operational control responsibilities, flight planning/weather information, and charter operations. Additional elements included technical analysis and business cases, coordination of special projects for the division, e.g. new city implementation, new equipment introductions, ETOPS, as well as coordination and development of policy and operating standards associated with the above elements. Established business processes and policies that ensured the overall responsibilities described above were achieved in a safe, compliant and efficient manner. Created and led the dedicated Fuel Conservation efforts. Evaluated, justified and implemented numerous initiatives, including blended winglets, variable cost index, changing Flight Planning System vendors, use of ground power equipment, weight reduction initiatives. These efforts saved $15M annually. Alaska Airlines is a recognized technology leader in the industry. Many of these firsts were justified, implemented and managed by this group, including HGS, RNP, EGPWS and RAAS.
