Commonwealth Games 2018 Gold Coast
-
Apr 2018 - Apr 2018
I had the pleasure and the privilege of working on the Commonwealth Games in 2018 on the Gold Coast. That was a huge set up. There were 2 teams; a day and a night team. The reason for the night team was we were not permitted to work on the stadium during the day. So the night crew were setting the pods on the roof at night, running cables between and testing them to make sure all was well. The day crew consisted of myself and a couple of others whom would load the pods with the single shot fireworks and then make sure all the angles were correct, all the fasteners were on the pods and then start on the next pod. There were 70 pods used for both the opening and closing ceremonies plus a range of other products that needed to be set up inside the arena. There were hand smokes used on about 60 or so timber look polls. They were long days but lots of fun. Once the the opening ceremony was completed, the roof was cleared and the pods stripped. Once stripped of the old product, we then began loading the closing ceremony. New product was picked and then secured to each pod and loaded back into transporting secure cages which were taken up to the arena at night and lifted to the roof for placement. Once this was done, we went to Jacobs well and set up for a day all the aerial shell fireworks that were to be loaded onto barges for the Closing Ceremony. There were hundreds of aerial shells from 3" or 75mm through to 8" or 200mm in diameter. The barge had just enough space to walk sideways between all the racks, from one end of the barge to the other. Hundreds of aerial shells were set up to fire and light the night sky in 90 seconds... I was on that barge and it literally thundered!! It was so intense, the concussions just thumping you so hard. It was the most intense and exhilarating 90 seconds, I can assure you!! You had to be there! I am looking forward to performing more intense, exciting and truly incredible displays for you in the future! Show less

The Brisbane EKKA 2010 - 2014
-
Aug 2010 - Aug 2014
I worked on the fireworks for the Brisbane EKKA between 2010 and 2014. That was some incredible fireworks displays. We would set up, sort the product, number it, fuse it and then load it onto the trailers. We used approximately 18 trailers. We had one specific aerial shell trailer and the rest of them had all the fireworks ground cakes that were used. We had angles up to 40 degrees on the single shots to make the display cross over and dance to the music. We formed the 18 trailers into 2 rings; and inner and outer ring. Different trailers had different product to make the show that much more entertaining. There was also the kites. We hung Gerbs (fountains) off the wings of the kites. There were 4 sets of kites and each set had about 4 kites joined together. They were tied to the back of quad bikes and when time came, the quad took off and the kites shot out of their holding bay and boom into the air, When the kite hit the height, the Gerbs were ignited and they burnt for 60 seconds as the kites were pulled around the arena. The good old days where we made magic. Show less
