      • Updated and drafted P&IDs and PFDs• Collected and compared volumetric flow rate and pressure drop data using a ultra sonic flow meter and pressure gauges• Constructed Hydrostatic model in Aspen Hysys using the principals of fluid mechanics and existing data• Applied collected data to improve Hydrostatic model • Collaborated with engineers and operators to gather and apply data• Proposed solutions for under or over fed heat exchangers• Identified the need for more cooling water in the systemFor my internship, I built a model in Aspen Hysys to balance the water headers for the refinery's cooling water system. I started by making PFDs for the equipment in the system from P&IDs for each system. Then, I measure the length of the pipes to the different pieces of equipment. After building the structure of the system in Hysys, I found the design data for the equipment in the system. Using design data for the heat exchanger and other pieces of equipment, I built the model to calculate the pressure drop through equipment using a ration between flow and pressure drop. Finally, I checked the model against what was happening in the refinery. Operators help me gather pressure data, and I used an ultra sonic flow meter to find the flows through different pieces of equipment. The data was then implemented into the model. The hope for the model was to find a solution to under fed equipment. It estimated the affect adding booster pumps and orifice plates.

      • Interacted with contractors and City Officials• Aided in the sanitation of pipes with chlorine• Assisted in the dechlorination of pipesThis job gave me the opportunity to learn the basic infrastructure of city water systems. Also, I learned about the sanitation of water on a large scale and small scale for potable water.SKE uses pre-chlorianated pipe bursting to replace old water mains. Pipe bursting involves pulling new pipe through old pipe. The old pipe is broken as the new pipe is pulled along, so the diameter of the new main is not different from the old. The pipe is sanitized before being put into the ground This process benefits the residence, because not every driveway and road needs to be dug up.
