To create a culture of high achievement, in the 2012-2013 school year, I initiated the Middle School Honor Roll. Through intentional meetings with students to review their progress each trimester, the number of students earning a B or higher in all their classes has more than doubled. I organize a celebration each marking period to recognize their efforts, inviting staff and the students’ families to attend. This event is a great opportunity to build relationships with parents and invite them to support the school’s efforts. College and career readiness is the focus of my work at Burr. This includes the transition to high school. Some of the activities that I plan include inviting previous students back to share their own high school experiences. Our alumni create presentations about their respective high schools to help students make decisions about which school might be the right choice. In collaboration with a colleague at Bulkeley High School, eighth graders also hear from a student panel to learn about transcripts, credits, and getting involved in school activities. Once students have gained some knowledge about their high school options, I then meet with each student and his or her parent to complete applications . Since school year 2012-2013, all middle school students have been building their Student Success Plans. I have created a comprehensive school counseling curriculum, which I teach in all three grade levels in collaboration with the classroom teachers. Grade eight students culminate their middle school portion of their Student Success Plans with college tours and information sessions in partnership with colleges such as Trinity, University of St. Joseph, Central Connecticut State University, Tunxis Community College, and University of Hartford.
