Digitisation Volunteer

Jan 2018 - May 2018
I was a volunteer for West Dumbartonshire Council, working with a team of volunteers as a Digitisation Volunteer for the Stitch in Time Project. This project was an excellent way to develop my skills with photography collections and visual arts, further my use of Adlib, carry out repetitive tasks and remain motivated, and also work within a substantial team to deliver a high-quality project whilst largely unsupervised. A part time contracted position. I represented a positive, enthusiastic image of the institution, delivering confident tours, detailing the upcoming refurbishment and generally engaging confidently with the public. Additionally, I developed a close relationship with the collection and have extensive handling experience of suits of armour, weaponry, art, tapestries and musical instruments, having decanted the main exhibition space and presented the collection for an external valuation conducted by Sotheby’s. I carried out extensive cataloguing, updating condition and location reports, carried out cleaning where fitting, and photographed and packed the collection ready for removal in appropriate, correctly labelled boxing according to best practise and implementing collections management policies.

Volunteer Room Steward / Collections Care Assistant
-
Jun 2013 - Dec 2014
During my time as a volunteer at Culzean Castle and Country Park, as well as taking guided tours and room stewarding as part of a team of volunteers, and additional administrative duties, I also used best practise to handle, store and install display pieces for summer and winter exhibitions. Additionally, I carried out cataloging work using the National Trust for Scotland collections management system, inputting data related to the object, such as its provenance and its condition, and ensuring that such records were kept up to date and accurate in accordance to the NTS museum standards. It was a great opportunity to study, handle and care for a small sample of Scottish collections, as I often cleaned and carried frames, furniture, chandeliers and weapons.

The ethical implications of working at Auschwitz were crucial to my understanding of the care and interpretation of their collections, as well as my own research within the camp to discover new histories. Volunteering at the camp was a truly humbling experience, and being able to study and work with their collections was not only educational in regards to caring for such fragile, humane items, but unforgettable. This week in 2012 provided me with an in-depth examination of how the Holocaust is depicted across the site, how conservation is carried out and how to treat human belongings and remains with the greatest amount of care and respect.
