From the very first conversation I had with Sasha, I immediately knew that our connection and relationship would be transformative. I'm not surprised to say that I was right. Sasha has an incredible mix of analytical, creative, and strategic skills that allow her to connect the dots, identify relationships between different variables, and create effective ideas and plans. She understands both the macro and the micro of all of the systems that influence her and her client's business -- whether it's the cultural and anthropological influences at play, the social determinants of health, public policy, or human physiology. She knows how to develop products and content that make it easy for people to understand these complex systems without overwhelming them. She's also incredibly skilled at balancing storytelling with technical information. As a leader, Sasha is good-natured, practices humility, and prioritizes empathy. Everyone who has worked with us has explicitly stated how much they enjoy working with Sasha and how they have benefited greatly from the value she brings to the team and company. She sees people as human beings and embraces them as individuals. She has always been eager to contribute in whatever ways necessary to accomplish the team's goals, but still maintains healthy boundaries and work-life harmony. On this same note, Sasha has demonstrated on multiple occasions that she is willing to acquire new skills and advance her understanding of a topic to contribute at a higher level. Sasha has been pivotal to my own professional and personal growth and development. I love working with her, and anyone else who works with her will likely experience the same.

While Sasha was at Tufts University, she built a remarkable record of academic excellence and service on three continents. I was her academic advisor and teacher. She was our strongest Anthropology major, which we recognized by awarding her the 2012 Anthropology Prize. Impressively, she won three other major university awards in the same year: the President’s Award, the Senior Alumni Association Award, and the Cowdery Prize for Leadership and Civic Engagement. Most of our students have strengths in either cultural or biological anthropology, but Sasha engaged both to help her address malnutrition in Latin America. She conducted ethnographic research for a senior thesis on the role of maize in an indigenous K’iche’ town in the Guatemalan highlands. She prepared carefully, taking K’iche’ language lessons for 2 ½ months via Skype, and spending a month studying organizations engaged in fighting malnutrition in Guatemala. Her field research combined a range of methodologies: participant observation, semi-structured interviews, kinship mapping, and a detailed food diary. Her thesis was awarded Highest Honors: she found that maize has such a central position in community life that it not only serves as an indicator of food security but is also critical for social cohesion—which weakens when maize is scarce. Sasha’s commitment to sustainable development and to promoting hands-on learning was unflagging. She held an extraordinary number of leadership positions at Tufts. To name just a few, she was Co-Coordinator of the Institute for Global Leadership’s BUILD Program for sustainable development, for teams in both Guatemala and India. She was elected as one of the Student Representatives for the Board of Advocates for Tufts’ Tisch College for Citizenship and Public Service. She was the Undergraduate Coordinator for the Empower Fund for Social Entrepreneurship in Tufts’ Institute for Global Leadership. And she was vice president of STAIR (Students and Tufts Acting for Immigrant Rights). She was always a delight to work with. Any organization or institution anywhere would be lucky to have her!

Sasha was in my seminar class on Social Enterprises, and we also had frequent contact in her role as a Tisch Scholar. Where some students set out to write any business plan based on what they might already know, Sasha cared deeply about solving a problem she saw - malnutrition in her home country of Guatemala. And so she did the research to understand the challenge deeply and personally, combined her academic skills with dedication to learn a local language, along with newfound business skills, and prepared a truly promising plan. In addition, she worked very well with her project team, engaging them in the enthusiasm she had for the enterprise. Resourceful. Committed. Smart. Generous. Team leader. Hard working. If you have the chance. chose Sasha to be on your team.
