I wear a lot of hats: college counselor, grant writer, event planner, social media manager, cheerleader, advocate. That is the fun of being the sole staff member at a young and growing non-profit. Our students and mentors come to me for college counseling, where I help with everything from essay writing to deciphering financial aid awards. I've worked to establish partnerships with colleges across the country including the University of Rochester, Hope College, and Elmhurst University. These partnerships allow college admissions officers to be in direct contact with our students while also providing financial aid opportunities to our cohorts. Additionally, I've spearheaded our participation in Giving DuPage Days, a single-day fundraising event where we raised nearly $10,000 to support our work. Above all, I'm able to (hopefully) impact on the lives of our first-generation and low-income high school seniors who, in turn, have left an impact on me. Show less

Mar 2020 - Jan 2021
At Nurturing Wisdom, I'm able to put my experience in college admissions to good use as I work with families at the beginning of the application process. I spend most of my days in contact with my caseload of families, but when I have free time, I create content and contribute to our social media channels. This role allows me to draw on my ability to juggle many (many!) things at once, communicate with empathy, and explore the college admissions process from a family's point of view. Assistant Director of Admissions
-
Jul 2015 - Mar 2020
As Assistant Director of Admissions, I was fortunate to represent Purdue University at college fairs and high schools. It was a pleasure to hear stories from alumni about their Purdue experiences, and to share my own Purdue stories with prospective students. When I wasn't on the road, I served on the Admissions Committee for various colleges at Purdue, reviewed applications for Honors College admissions, and managed all social media channels - Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. I've facilitated our daily admissions presentation to groups of up to 50, co-advised our volunteer tour guide group, and managed Purdue's for Me, an admitted student event that happens seven times during the spring semester for over 8,000 guests. My rural roots were combined with my passion for small business and position with the Historic Lafayette Farmers Market in an appointment to the Indiana Grown Initiative Commission, where I worked with 11 other commission members to provide guidance and direction to ISDA staff as we connected businesses with Indiana-based producers of meat, fruits, vegetables, wine, and forest products. Aug 2013 - Dec 2014
Dive head-first into community-minded, people-focused projects and you'll learn more than you ever dreamed. As the Small Business Program Manager, I was reminded of the tough-as-nails work ethic of small business owners as I manage the Small Business of the Month program and honor 11 outstanding small business owners throughout the year at the Small Business of the Year award reception. My background in event planning was put to work as I coordinated the Historic Lafayette and Purdue Farmers Markets, Purdue Football Kickoff Luncheon, and our community's first Small Business Saturday programming. In addition to serving as the staff liaison for the University Relations, Education, Small Business, and Hilltop-to-Hilltop Committees, I was responsible for coordinating the selection of and televised banquet for the Golden Apple Award winners, a program recognizing five outstanding educators in the area. Mini-Marathon Intern
-
Jan 2012 - Jun 2012
Event planning isn't glamorous, but the 500 Festival taught me the importance of having a great team by your side. I assisted in the production of the nation's largest half marathon, including three Training Series events leading up to the race. I was responsible for the coordination of elite athletes, distribution of race awards, and communication between board and committee members. Additionally, I handled all ticket sales, gift bags, and interior setup for the Snakepit Ball, a black-tie event. Show less

Executive Director of Programming

May 2011 - Dec 2011
Navigating the inner workings of university event planning was a challenge, but I enjoyed every minute. The Executive Director of Programming is responsible for the planning, management, and execution of all activities sponsored by Purdue Student Government, including internal events for 70+ members and overseeing campus-wide initiatives, like Elections Day voting stations and Homecoming events. Alongside my team of five, I coordinated student-developed programs and created activities to promote Purdue Student Government on a university-wide level. Show less

Events and Educational Activities Intern
-
Apr 2010 - Aug 2010
Planning an event for one day is a piece of cake after planning an event for 17 days. In this role, I got to wear many hats, as I coordinated media efforts and managed volunteers for the Purdue University exhibits in the Our Land Pavilion at the Indiana State Fair. I wrote a variety of documents including press releases, exhibit descriptions, and created a scavenger hunt to enhance the visitor experience. I also was responsible for handling all communication with over 100 extension volunteers, conducting daily orientation sessions, and serving as the main point-of-contact for volunteers and visitors.
