Working with Dr. Inoue was always a pleasure! As a copywriter, I rely on the intelligence of the experts around me, and Sarah was very generous with her time as we collaborated to draw conclusions from vast amounts of data. While this work can leave a researcher blind to the humanity behind the numbers, Sarah never wavered in her commitment to the individual patients and their needs.

I've known Dr. Inoue since graduate school and have come to really admire her thoughtful dedication to sussing out complex socio-political trends, opinions and behavior. I have been particularly impressed with her use of social listening skills and techniques to pull out subtle but significant information from community discussions on important topics. Recently I come to her with a request. I am an Associate Dean at the University of California San Diego, and our University, like many, has been struggling to figure out how to appropriately and thoughtfully consider the varied and sometimes extremely challenging experiences our employees have had during the Covid pandemic. In particular, it is abundantly clear that some segments of society (care-givers, women, BIPOC community members) have disproportionately suffered this year. It is one thing however to know that in the abstract, and another to know how those national trends affect our own employees - the latter is what we needed for actionable and structural responses. We conducted survey of our faculty, but an unusual open ended one. We set up a google form and allowed employees (Faculty to start) to anonymously describe their experiences this year, what issues they have struggled with in terms of the impact on their work productivity, and what university actions might be most helpful. Somewhat to our amazement, we had an enormous response rate, and people poured out paragraph after paragraph of their experiences. We were somewhat overwhelmed and didn't quite know how to deal with this volume of incredible information. I talked to Sarah about it, and because she felt passionately about the cause, she donated her time pro bono to help us. She read through all the responses, methodically picked out patterns, trends, and wrote an entire report for us. There are *so many* issues in society today that could be analyzed in a similar manner, issues of Covid impacts, political trends, racism, societal impacts to climate change. There are older and well established social science techniques for analyzing simple surveys and demographic information, but that gives you only the tip of the iceberg. In order to really understand the complexities of modern experience on all of those important topics, we need cutting edge researchers like Dr. Inoue using novel techniques to pull out the real stories. I could easily see her being invaluable.
