Many claim to have an attention for detail, but few can back it up like Sarah can. When I began working with Sarah at U of T it was my first foray into marketing and brand management. It was always fascinating to watch her tease out ideas and insights from information that other people had missed. One thing I learned from Sarah was that – although it is a simple-sounding idea it’s not always well practiced - having a clear understanding of a brand is foremost in promoting and building loyalty to that brand. Helping a complex organization like the university define its brand is one of her many successes and an example of another one of Sarah’s strength. Working with Sarah was a tremendous learning experience for me, anyone starting out in the marketing field would be fortunate to have her as a mentor.

A member of the Executive Team charged with revolutionizing the business from a nationalized company to a privatized one, and managing the considerable change in culture from British Rail (operational satisfaction) to Virgin (passenger satisfaction). I was responsible for a cost budget of 15-20M sterling and a department of 45-65 professionals in Marketing, Sales, Public Relations, Customer Relations, Revenue Management and management of the substantial Virgin TrainLine (call centre) contract. A defining role, which inspired me to be the driving force and visionary behind the new product and on-train customer service strategy - the first tangible evidence of ‘Virginification’; to lead the delivery of Year 1 and 2 increases in passenger revenue of 11% and 13% respectively; to become the key media spokesperson for ‘bad news’ stories (replacing Richard Branson) appearing live on national and regional TV and radio; and to oversee the set up of the first internet rail ticket retailing in the UK, the Virgin TrainLine. I had the incredible fortune to work closely on the Customer Experience with Richard Branson, especially in year 2 when our performance issues were damaging the Virgin brand's reputation, and learned much at the feet of this master. Board Director, responsible for this environmental group’s £10M product business in CPG, DIY and Industrial fields. Key responsibilities were NPD, all sales and marketing functions, liaising with advertising and PR agencies and Customer Relations. Major success was in helping change the dynamics of the household cleaning market, forcing key players (P&G, Lever Bros) to make their formulations more environmentally-responsible. Ark, which was founded by Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders), Kevin Godley (10cc) and two ex Greenpeace activists, was ahead of its time in recognizing that enabling people to make a difference via products was more powerful than guilting people into giving money to support campaigns.
