Sarah was employed early fall 2007 to spring 2008 at Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences and I have had the pleasure of overseeing her work as a research intern in two of our conservation projects: water quality and biodiversity in seasonal wetlands project and coordinated bird monitoring work. The water quality project seeks to obtain critically-needed information about vernal pool water quality, potential impacts from non-point source pollution (such as lawn-care chemicals, pesticides, road salt, and metals) and biodiversity health. The goal of the coordinated bird monitoring project is to promote a coordinated approach to monitoring avian abundance and distribution for wading birds, seabirds, and marshbirds by working closely with states, federal entities, institutions and other non-governmental organizations. Sarah contributed the development of several vernal pool conservation tools for use by private landowners and municipal land managers. Sarah researched information for and helped design a two-page outreach piece entitled,

Sarah was a diligent and conscientious student in my Black & Whites Film Photography classes at Hamilton College, always looking for inventive solutions and stretching the boundaries of what's possible. She has gone to build an impressive career as a Biological Science Technician, who aspires to use sound data, innovation, and creativity to advance environmental sustainability and conservation initiatives. I'm proud to have had Sarah as my student. Sylvia de Swaan

I am an Adjunct Instructor for BIO 107, Biology of the Environment. I have taught this course in the classroom, as a hybrid course, and also as a distance course. I am responsible for the creation of all course material, building and planning of courses, and grading/feedback. I work to instill a thorough understanding and appreciation of the natural world in each of my students. I aspire to be both an instructor and a mentor, and I take great pride in my responsibilities as an educator. I embrace the College's culture of life-long learning and celebration of diversity. As a Biological Science Technician, I managed two ecotoxicology projects in California's Central Valley. Both projects were designed to assess methymercury exposure in passerine birds breeding in contaminated sites. I coordinated an extensive mark-recapture project in the Cache Creek Settling Basin, an area contaminated from historical mining activity. I captured over 500 passerines from multiple habitat types within the study site. Each bird was processed for multiple measurements, a breast feather sample, and a small blood sample for mercury analysis. Additionally, I monitored nearly 500 passerine nest boxes at the both the Cache Creek Settling Basin and the Cosumnes River Preserve. Each nest box was regularly visited and all breeding activity documented until the final fate could be determined. I was responsible for the coordination of daily field tasks, for which I trained multiple technicians. I have extensive experience training others in mist netting, passerine handling, and blood sample collection. In addition to the oversight of field projects, I managed, entered, and proofed all data sets. I performed preliminary analyses and reported progress to supervisors. I was responsible for the continual evaluation of the success of each project and provided suggestions for improving the quality of data. I was elevated from GS-5 to GS-6 well in advance of 1 year mark. Show less

As a Master of Science Candidate, I designed a research project to study mercury-associated endocrine disruption in a breeding model organism, the Australian Zebra Finch. Using one of the most extensive captive dosing projects to date, I employed multiple research methods including lab-based and quantitative analyses to answer important questions regarding the effect of mercury exposure on passerine endocrine function. During the course of my degree, I attended and presented at multiple pertinent conferences, including the International Conference for Mercury as a Global Pollutant. As the captive dosing study was established as a result of anthropogenic mercury contamination in the nearby Shenandoah River Valley, I obtained preliminary understanding of processes involved in the assessment of damage to natural resources. As a Teacher's Assistant, I independently taught 2 lab sections each week. I graded weekly assignments, lab reports, and exams. Additionally, I held office hours and provided extra extra help to students. As a Warbler Demography Technician, I assisted with a long-term study of forest bird populations at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. I collected data used to determine the effects of global climate change on distribution and abundance of Black-throated Blue Warblers along an elevational gradient. Responsibilities included mapping territories of males, re-sighting color-banded individuals, searching for and monitoring nests, predator surveys, entering and proofing data, and conducting a bi-weekly census of avian species in the study plot. • Bird Banding Intern
      • Jul 2008 - Oct 2008

I was a Volunteer Banding Intern for a non-profit research organization dedicated to the advancement of bird and habitat conservation in the Klamath-Siskiyou bioregion of southern Oregon and northern California. I collected extensive mark-recapture data for Klamath Bird Observatory's long-term landbird monitoring program. This data is used by biologists from the Bureau of Land Management for analysis of anthropogenic activities and impacts on threatened and endangered bird populations. My primary responsibilities included passerine mist-netting and banding, ageing and sexing birds using advanced techniques (using Peter Pyle's Identification Guide to North American Passerines), application of known information on geographic variation, molt, age, and sex to identify species and subspecies, daily survey of avian species at each site, data entry and management, school group outreach and education, and equipment maintenance. Upon completion of this internship, I became a North American Banding Council certified landbird bander. Show less

I assisted a Ph.D candidate with a project designed to investigate the behavioral and ecological factors influencing the hybridization of Golden-winged and Blue-winged Warblers. As the Golden-winged Warbler is endangered in the state of Kentucky, research was designed to inform habitat restoration and management plans for Golden-winged Warblers. My responsibilities as a Field Assistant included target mist-netting adults, collecting morphometric data, color banding and blood sampling both adults and nestlings, nest searching and monitoring, radio telemetry, intensive behavioral observation, song recording, vegetation sampling, and territory mapping. I was a Conservation Science Intern for one of the nation’s oldest science-based conservation organizations known for building cooperative solutions to environmental problems. I assisted with a report regarding estimation of productivity for wading bird colonies. For this report, I transcribed data from colonial waterbird nest/egg/chick counts from multiple islands over multiple decades into Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, Performed preliminary statistical evaluations on waterbird productivity data, Collected background information regarding previous efforts to develop indices of reproductive success for avian species, and assisted with writing Introduction, Methods, and Discussion sections of the report. Additionally, I completed a project summarizing existing information regarding the effects of common pesticide and herbicide use on vernal pool health and productivity. I developed a series of practical landowner guides for vernal pool protection, which were distributed to local landowners. The guides introduced vernal pools as important ecological systems, detailed the life histories of obligate species, and presented necessary steps for landowners to certify vernal pools in accordance with the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act. Landowners were also encouraged to to minimize pesticide and herbicide use and maximize buffer zones surrounding pools. Finally, I compiled a extensive literature review of the impacts of salt and de-icing chemicals on amphibian populations in New England. I also reviewed and summarized the efficacy of alternative, sustainable practices that did not involve the use of chemicals. Show less
