Sarah Kirby is an exquisite and natural teacher who quickly became a campus favorite among students. She is intuitive and engaging, all while encouraging us to expand our ideas about large concepts, and she has a gentle knack for keeping classroom discussions focused and on-track. You can tell that she really respects and wants to see her students succeed. Most impressive to me was her ability to weave a critical thinking curriculum into an advanced composition class - while this may seem like an obvious pairing, it's unfortunate that many students these days arrive at college, especially at community college, without some critical thinking skills already in place. Sarah saw this need and filled it. Also, while we certainly read and discussed classic texts, as a millennial and just a very smart woman in general, she understands that modern learning makes use of a variety of different tools and makes these concepts more accessible to today's students. The more critical thinkers we have, the better off we'll be. Our classes were always peppered with Ted talks and Youtube videos, articles about current events and eye-opening discussions, and we were also encouraged to read and talk about each others' essays and that, too, helped us all improve. I know without a doubt that she helped me get where I am today. She is a real gift to higher ed and I look forward to watching her career grow, as both an educator and a writer.
