Working as a front-of-house manager and receptionist at Wild Spirit afforded me the opportunity to grow and nurture my capacity as a human being in every direction. Dealing with people from every walk of life, from all over the world and facilitating their stay at this beautiful lodge was invaluable for my interpersonal skillset and emotional intelligence as well as a general understanding of the world. I got a taste of the front-end hospitality side of things, dealing with accommodation preparation, meals, experiences and overall happiness of guests, some food preparation and simply being the first face a guest engages with when entering the premises. On the back-end side, there was stock work, POS systems, cash ups, wages, check-in and check-outs, and beyond. Team building and living in a small, connected community was the experience of a lifetime and allowed me to expand my potential to connect, understand and immerse in this life more than is possible to articulate. Coming from big city life with a background in psychology, philosophy, digital marketing, and community management, I believe this experience cracked me open like a nut, exploring different directions to add to my altogether well-rounded capacity as a member of the world. Umuzi.org is an NGO with the purpose of training young people with digital skills for tech careers. Their model challenges traditional tertiary education by creating space and opportunities for upskilling in a working environment, where recruits obtain the skills they need for high-value tech careers while working in teams and engaging with a working environment. Instead of paying to study, recruits get paid to learn, grow and unlock their potential as talented young people. Umuzi partners with leading employer partners to create these opportunities and are seeing expansion all around the country and beyond into Africa with the African Coding Network. My work at Umuzi began as an internship, where I slotted into wherever help was needed, with data collection, facilitation of Design Thinking workshops, and general engagement with recruits and team members. As time progressed, my six-month internship shifted into a full-time position as Community Manager, looking after the social media presence of the NGO, as well as keeping energy and engagement high amongst recruits and team members as we shifted from an in-person office to a completely remote online learning and employment space. Event management and planning, digital marketing, human resources, and connection were among the many roles I took on in this space. Umuzi opened me up to a world my adolescent self never had the capacity to imagine, and through the experiences had there, I look forward to a life of work in the social sector. Show less
