Student Occupational Therapist- Acute Inpatient Care
-
May 2021 - Jul 2021
My final placement is an 8-week full time block in acute care at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton. I am working on family medicine, cardiovascular, surgical, and transitional care units. I have the opportunity to enable the occupations of adults with a wide range of health conditions including dementia, pressure ulcers, fractures, surgery, amputations, cancer, stroke, and other complex medical diagnoses. This placement involves reception and triage of multiple referrals each day in a fast paced setting. My priorities are to collaborate with the client and care team to establish meaningful and functional goals of care, prevent exacerbation of conditions such as wounds, and make recommendations to help ensure a safe discharge from the hospital. I am developing my skills in wheelchair maintenance and provision, wound offloading, and ADL training. Once a week, I make phone calls to pre-operative clients to talk about their postoperative goals, educate about precautions, assess support needs for a safe and functional return to their home, and make referrals/ requests for necessary pieces of adaptive equipment.
