  Worked for four neurosurgical subspecialty teams in this regional NHS multi-trauma unit and Royal Centre for Defence Medicine. Role centred on developing effective strategies to communicate with vulnerable patient groups and families; identifying patients’ needs and issues pertaining to illness and dealing with each in a sensitive manner; explaining procedures, possible risks and complications; spending time with anxious relatives and providing support and reassurance. Duties included clinical, practical and administrative tasks; following peri-operative care protocols; interpreting clinical data, attending oncology and neurovascular MDT meetings as time permitted; supporting the nursing staff and other MDT members ensuring efficiency of patient transit through the department. Practical skills: phlebotomy and cannulation, interpretation of blood results; performing and interpreting ABG’s and ECG’s; x-ray interpretation and basic CT and MRI findings; administering oxygen therapy, basic and immediate life support; NG tube insertion; male and female catheterisation and suturing. Under supervision of the neurosurgical team: performed lumbar punctures, collected CSF samples from extra-ventricular drains (EVD’s), removed EVD’s when CSF circulation had been restored and sutured the defect.
