Step and Connect is a service that aims to improve the social integration of young people with a disability living in North and East London. The service trains disabled young people to travel safely on their chosen journey, so that they have better access to leisure activities and essential services. The service also runs a participation group for disabled young people to voice their ideas on inclusion and good practice. Step and Connect trains local professionals and services on disability awareness and encourages them to be approachable and accessible for disabled young people. My role was to start up and deliver the Step and Connect service. Show less

    • Young Hackney Practitioner
      • Nov 2011 - Oct 2014

Young Hackney merged the youth offending team, youth provision and youth support services for the borough. For my role I worked in all three areas with a variety of young people and families, this enabled me to utilise resources and provide a more holistic service. I worked in line with youth justice board procedures; completing Asset assessments, court reports and supervising young people on statutory orders. I had a flexible working approach depending on the young person and their family's risks, vulnerabilities and support needs. I provided support on preventing reoffending, housing, finances, education and employment, substance misuse, weapons awareness, community participation and signposting, as well as emotional support. I specialised in supporting young offenders with mental health needs. During my role, I built up and maintained relationships with several external agencies. I regularly co-worked with CAMHS. I also worked with Children's services, housing, training and employment schemes, schools, recreational groups, youth clubs, solicitors and voluntary sector services. I led two youth groups, a youth forum and a dancing/ singing group. I was also a lead for the C-Card sexual health scheme in the service. Show less

  • Re-Unite, Housing for Women
    • Greenwich, Southwark and Lewisham
    • Resettlement Support Worker
      • Jan 2010 - Nov 2011

Re-Unite enabled mothers to be reunited with their children after serving a prison sentence by providing through the gate support and stable accommodation on release from custody. I carried out in-reach work in six female prisons. Once the women were released I offered emotional and practical support that helped the families to resettle together and eventually be empowered to move onto independent living. I worked closely with probation, DAATs and Children's services. Re-Unite had ten properties and the project coordinator and myself carried out the day-to-day running. Re-Unite South London was a pilot project with the aim to repeat the model across the UK. Several successful replications of the model have since been created. I recorded information on the running of the project that was used for evaluation research. I attended at the House of Commons, and Criminal Justice sector events to promote the model and the need for more specialist support for women in the criminal justice system. Show less
