I worked with Sarah on an extremely complex, lengthy and demanding project during our time together at Techmodal. From the outset, Sarah struck me as a highly intelligent individual who can grasp new and challenging situations with ease and is more than willing to tackle these head on with a view on finding a solution to it quickly and efficiently. She also demonstrated a sound ability to understand our customers’ problems/challenges and had a brilliant knack for asking really pertinent questions at the ideal moment that facilitated a better understanding of the challenge at hand, which really helped the team get into a position to move things forward. Sarah’s technical ability is exceptional to say the least. She consistently demonstrated her deep knowledge of Python based coding practices and quickly picked up how to code in both pySpark and Typescript which was crucial to our team’s ability to work through the requirements in our backlog efficiently and deliver value regularly. Sarah’s knowledge and experience of working in a complex, Agile environment, coupled with her ability to learn new ways of working quickly whilst still applying best practice principles, meant she took on the role as Tech Lead within our team helping to ensure our team followed the correct operating procedures and technical requirements demanded of us. Sarah’s communication skills are also outstanding, which she regularly utilised both internally with the team, and externally with key stakeholders. Her ability to communicate in a clear and concise fashion facilitated a good understanding across all parties involved on the progress of both her tasks and that of the team. Further to this, Sarah’s polite and respectful demeanour means she is an absolute pleasure to work with day and day out. Sarah’s diligent approach to everything she does means she’s an extremely capable, safe pair of hands and is always ready to lead by example. I have no doubt Sarah will have a wonderfully successful career in the years that follow and any team she works with will quickly realise how lucky they are to have her as part of it.

I begun working with Sarah in February 2022 while we were at Techmodal. I very quickly realised that Sarah is one of the hardest workers, and fast learners I've worked with. She very quickly expanded her technical skills. Bringing Python, Flask and ArangoDB into her repertoire as well as developing her consulting abilities, targeting customers' problem areas with well thought out questions. She now excels at Agile working and manages her time competently, balancing project requirements with corporate roles. She is an important member of the Staff Council at Techmodal, and her tireless work for the Women in Tech group has promoted many important, interesting conversations within the company. She is a good Data Engineer but much more than that, as the above attests. Sarah's nature makes her a pleasure to work with. She is curious (in the most positive sense of the word), frequently asking questions to further her own understanding or the group's. She is always available for a conversation about personal matters and is very empathetic to all situations, all in all, a great colleague. Going forwards, I have no doubt that Sarah will succeed in whichever area she chooses to specialise.

While studying at Cardiff University, I gained a one month summer placement working on a phylogenetic/bioinformatic centred project with the School of Bioscience. This placememt was funded by Ede & Ravenscroft. Title: Mining the black rhinoceros’ genome to investigate adaptation. Summary: Tasked with modelling the demographic history of the Southern black rhinoceros (D.b.bicornis). Generated assembled genome by aligning Illumina TruSeq sequences (2.5G in size) using Burrow-Wheeler Aligner (BWA) to a reference genome (Diceros bicornis) downloaded from GenBank. Processed alignment data from BWA using SAMTools and applied Pairwise Sequentially Markovian Coalescent (PSMC) to D.b.bicornis assembled genome using High Performance Computing. Generated a PSMC graph that outlined the demographic history of the Southern black rhinoceros. Outcomes: - Used High Performance Computing to model the demographic history of a D.b.bicornis - Handled large biological databases of up to 2.5G each on the University’s central server - Developed, updated, and executed shell scripts to run multiple commands through Linux command line - Compiled and ran Linux application on Windows laptop using Cygwin - Applied scientific knowledge to data to draw insights, and presented these findings to academic audiences - Networked with Cardiff University PhD students and lecturers Skills: Basic proficiency with Linux command line Phylogenetic analysis Bioinformatic analysis Show less

While studying at Cardiff University, I undertook a two-month summer placement provided by the Cardiff Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (CUROP). Title: A multi-omic approach to the analysis of mRNA and microRNA expression data in Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. Summary: Tasked with creating a program that demonstrates the biological links between multi-omic datasets (e.g., miRNA and mRNA from the same individuals). Uploaded mRNA and microRNA count data, along with annotation data (GTF/GFF file), into MultiDataSet (MDS) framework. Graphically represented biological links between miRNA, their gene targets, and subsequent mRNA, using the graphical database platform Neo4j. This involved generating code that unpacked data from MDS and pushed this data through Neo4j's R driver (RNeo4j). Successfully generated a tool for storing and graphically demonstrating the biological links between transcriptome data. This tool could assist transcriptome analysis by providing an overview of the gene and mRNA targets of miRNAs. Outcomes: - Engineered ETL pipeline in R that ingested transcriptomic data (along with annotation data) and modeled the relationships between the data using Neo4j - Managed GTF & GFF files containing annotation information for transcriptome data in R - Ingested and stored multiple datasets in a multi-omic R framework called MultiDataSet. - Graphically demonstrated the biological links between datasets (miRNA and mRNA) using the graphical database platform Neo4j - Presented findings to academics and members of the public, answered technical questions.
