Throughout my final semester at F&M, I worked with Professor Michael Penn, Ph.D. to study and learn more about the character trait grit, which Angela Duckworth defines as the tendency to sustain interest in and effort toward very long-term goals (Duckworth et al., 2007). We met with and mentored a group of first-year students who came to F&M with difficult paths to get to college. We wanted to know what would make them successful college students and studied grit as it pertained to getting them where they are. Show less

    • Independent Researcher
      • Aug 2016 - May 2017

Under the guidance of Professor Michael Penn, PhD., I undertook a community-based study to assess the how the Sex Offender Registry affects an offender's mental health and well-being. I was looking to see the impact of being designated a “sex offender” on the psychological health of men living in Lancaster City. This study, the first of its kind, revealed that these psychological effects can be harmful to pre-existing mental health disorders and make it more likely for someone to re-offend.

As President, I aided in organizing and running F&M's SAAC's events. These included Teamwork, a community service day for athletes to go into the Lancaster community and volunteer, a Professor Appreciation Reception, Track-or-Treat, a trick-or-treating event for Lancaster families, and the Lancaster-Lebanon High School Leadership Day, a leadership workshop for high school student athletes. I also organized and planned all meetings with the help of our advisors, and communicated information to our council of over 100 members. Show less
