Co-owner
-
Sep 2009 - Nov 2010
In August 2009 I was given the opportunity to co-own a franchised signage business, called Fast Signs, which I decided would be a great learning experience. During this time, I travelled to the USA to learn how to not only make signs but how to run a signage business. Learning how to calculate quotes for various signage orders, so understanding the gross margin we needed to work towards, calculating the required material we would need, the wastage, time required, labour etc. Along with forecasting the required sales target’s we would need to hit, reconciling the bank account, maintaining the daily cashbook, calculating VAT returns and producing the month-end accounts. In November 2010 I had my first child and so took a step back from the business. In January 2012, I decided to start freelancing to get back into a financial role, where I felt my passion really lay.

Financial Assistant

Aug 2004 - Jun 2008
In August 2004 I decided to leave McDonald’s and took a step back financially to retrain and accepted an accounts assistant role at Konstsmide UK Ltd, a Swedish lighting company that supplied Christmas and Outdoor lighting products around the UK, with its headquarters being situated in Germany and another office in Sweden. During my four years at Konstsmide, I learned all roles within an accounts department and ran the purchase ledger and supplier accounts, provided credit control and sales account management. Along with processing invoices, despatch documents, creating BACs transfers and receipts. Building on my experience at McDonald's I also provided support in handling customer enquiries and complaints in person and via telephone. During my time at Konstsmide, I gained my AAT qualification, which enabled me to understand the technical and theoretical part to finance and accounting, whilst undertaking and experiencing the day to day accounts role.

Graduate Trainee Management Programme
-
Sep 2002 - Jul 2004
After leaving University with a BA (Hons) History degree in 2001, I embarked on a Graduate Trainee Management programme with McDonalds. During the first six months I learnt the business from the ground up, which included hands on experience, in order to understand every aspect of the restaurant’s routine. After this I gained experience in managing a small team and after a year became responsible for running an entire shift. Along with running shifts I also gained experience in stock control and ordering supplies, conducting risk assessments, performing monthly health & safety audits, cash handling and balancing the cash registers each day after an employee ended their shift, security procedures and the collection and analysing of sales data. It was during my experience in these areas that I decided I wanted to learn more specifically about accounts and the more financial side of business.
