Henderson Settlement is a Nonprofit, community based organization deep in the hills of Kentucky. The Settlement was founded for the people of the area, who are largely cut off from other towns. The settlement provides community programs throughout the year. I worked with the Summer Recreation program. My position was exclusively working with children, aged three to six. Each day, I would have anywhere from five to fifteen children. My duties included:-organizing meal time -promoting art and literacy through activities -lesson planning for free time-observing the children -looking out for/reporting signs of physical abuse- being the main source of comfort and compassion during the dayWhile the name Summer Rec may sound like an average summer day-camp, it serves a more important role in the children's lives than the average camp. Many of the families in the area suffer from poverty (lack of local jobs in the area) and abuse (physical and opioid related). For many of the children, the two meals served at the camp are the only ones they will get that day. For others, the camp serves as much needed social time. My role was the bridge the gap between school years with compassion and fun. Every child deserves to have a good summer.
