IDMAJ neighborhoods association is a NGO working in a disadvantaged area of urban Casablanca, Morocco. The association was created to offer a safe place for children to grow, learn and interact with other members of the community. The organization seeks to instill leadership abilities in young children to become the next generation of community leaders, social mediators and role models. Through international exchanges, language classes, art classes, educational seminars, leadership workshops and many other activities, the association perpetuates a model of tolerance and leadership for under-served and marginalized youth. Working at this NGO opened my eyes to the rampant inequality in Casablanca and the negative repercussions underprivileged children suffer from due to factors outside of their control. From understaffed and underfunded schools, harassment and safety concerns, to name a few, children must overcome huge obstacles and outside pressures to succeed in school. The hospitality, respect and genuine kindness the children and their parents gave to each other and every volunteer will always resonate with me and serve as a bar for which to rise to in my life. My duties included: -Teaching English classes to a wide range of ages -Organized a women only class for older community members, many of whom did not finish highschool and had never had an opportunity to learn English -Organizing activities and day camps -Arranging various visits to the center by a range of organizations and schools -Writing grants for funding of the organization Show less
